The Joy and Purpose of Elementary Community Meeting
A reflection by Claire Harris, Director of Elementary Education
Every other Friday morning from 8:30–9:00 a.m., our school gathers for one of my favorite traditions: Community Meeting. This cherished time is a chance to pause the hustle and bustle of the school week and connect as a collective, from our youngest learners in KEP to our seasoned Sixth Graders. It’s a moment that embodies the heart and soul of the Elementary community.
Each Community Meeting is carefully designed to bring joy, laughter, and connection. We begin with a fun poll question that always sparks lively debate. Whether it’s “Would you rather have penguin flippers for feet or a polar bear’s fur coat for skin?” or “Would you prefer to have your favorite fictional character live in your world or to live in theirs?” students eagerly raise their hands to vote and share their reasoning. These moments remind us that imagination and humor are essential parts of learning.
Performances are another highlight. Students share their talents, whether it’s playing a musical instrument, singing, or telling jokes. Their courage to perform in front of peers is met with genuine applause and encouragement, creating a space where every individual’s contribution is valued. Ms. Hofherr’s Kingsley News Report keeps us informed and entertained, with updates that even sports fans look forward to.
We also celebrate student voices during the sharing segment. Students stand proudly in front of the room to announce birthdays, share exciting plans, recount hilarious pet stories, or reflect on recent field trips. These moments allow everyone to feel seen and heard, reinforcing the importance of connection.
And then, there’s the games. The excitement during “The Hot Seat” and “Mystery Box” is palpable. Brave volunteers take the stage to guess clues provided by their peers, and the room erupts in cheers whether their answers are right or wrong. The enthusiasm and support are truly infectious, a testament to the camaraderie fostered.
No Community Meeting would be complete without our grand finale: a dance party. Students gather at the front or dance with friends, letting loose and having fun before transitioning to the rest of their day.
Community Meeting showcases everything I love about Kingsley. It’s a time where students lead, support one another, and celebrate individuality. It’s pure, joyful, and brimming with the energy of childhood. If you haven’t yet attended, I encourage you to join us. Bring your sense of fun—and maybe some noise-cancelling headphones—and witness the magic for yourself!
